The Alberta Hate Crimes Committee is a unique multi-sectoral collaboration that brings together law enforcement, government, non-profit, community, and university stakeholders to strategically address hate and bias crimes and incidents in Alberta. Through this collaboration we strive toward making Alberta a hate-free province.
The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police endorses the vision, mission and efforts of the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee.

Calgary
Public event with Mayoral Proclamation, guest speakers (Chief Rick Hanson, Human Rights Commissioner Honourable David Blair Mason), overview of the toolkit, presentation on ECARD project and Racism Healing Project, followed by breakout groups. They will be serving food and break out groups will develop action plans in three target areas (victims assistance, youth, tbd). The presentations will highlight what is already occurring in Calgary.

HATE CRIME AWARENESS DAY
April 24, 2012
On April 24, 2012 we are asking Alberta communities to proclaim the day as Hate Crimes Awareness Day as part of National Victim’s Awareness Week (April 23-27, 2012). This year’s theme for the day is “Support Victims of Hate Crime”. A number of events are planned throughout Alberta on this date. In Edmonton, a proclamation of hate crime awareness day will take place. Second, a media event/ press release will unveil the new Alberta Hate Crime Committee Community Resource Toolkit. And finally, in the evening, a community workshop facilitated by the AHCC will take place.

Whereas the week of May 9 – 15

2010 has been designated as Crime Prevention week in
Alberta, and in recognition thereof, communities through the Province are actively
participating in this event, and
Whereas the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 1 states “All
human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason
and conscience and should act towards one another in the spirit of brotherhood.” And,
Whereas the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms section 15(1) guarantees that “Every
individual is equal before and under the law has the right to the equal protection and benefit
of the law”; and
Whereas the Government of Alberta through the Alberta Human Rights Act recognizes as a
fundamental principle and as a matter of public policy that all persons are equal; and
Whereas (CITY/TOWN) wishes to heighten public awareness of hate crimes by working
together with crime prevention groups and citizens throughout the Province, and
Whereas our goal is to build a strong community which denounces and rejects hate activity
and crime by working cooperatively with justice, law enforcement agencies, schools, youth
groups, faith-based partners, ethnocultural groups, visible and invisible minority
communities, and businesses to build public awareness about hate crime activities, and
Whereas hate crime awareness and prevention depends on people working together in
families, neighborhoods, schools, businesses and community organizations along with local
law enforcement agencies to effect the laws in the criminal code, and to build safe healthy
communities, and
Whereas the people of our CITY/TOWN are in the forefront of efforts to establish a caring
and compassionate society that adheres to the principles and values of equality, fairness and
justice is focused on the elimination of all forms of hate, discrimination and disadvantage,
and
Whereas we continue our commitment to adhere to principles of human rights embodied the
values of equality, fairness, and justice
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor NAME, on behalf of (CITY/TOWN) Council do hereby
proclaim May 10, 2010 as
"Hate Crimes Awareness Day"
