E49 visa no good for land crossings
Last year I was scheduled on a flight through San Francisco to Australia. I travel on an Australian passport (10 years) rather than a Canadian one (5 years for the same price). I had to get an online visa good for 5 years for 49 Euros...don't ask why in Euros. Anyway, at the airport it was discovered that there was an extra 1 on the end of the visa number...a typo from somewhere in the process. I had to reapply. This meant I missed the flight and had to re route to Australia direct on the evening flight. When I went to the US by land last month I was refused entry because that 40Euro visa was "only good for air entry". Give me a break. Now I need another visa for land entry? Are their computers not linked? Also, on the Australia trip I noticed a gaping hole in security...people going via the States (as I was in the morning) go through the same security as those going direct to Aust and mingle on the other side. That evening those in front of us were searched to their sox while we breezed through with a quick glance because we were going direct. In the waiting zone we all mingled again.....this passes for security??? There is something very wrong with this whole picture.

Shopping accross boarder.
It seems the Ameracian boarder guarder are less rude now since most of the canadian go shopping in US. On the contrary, it is the Canadian guarders are geting you more and more irrateted. They should be more understandable why people have to go shopping across the boarder. I rarely cross the boarder in last few years since I were offten harrassed by both sides even with my NEXUS card. I thought it wasn't worth it. Unfortunately, the grocery price difference is so obvious, with limitted income, I may have to start go again. Just hope to be treated farely.
Friendly Canada, right!
Last summer I traveled to the states for business. San Francisco customs and airport agents where friendly and polite and acted like professionals, going true customs is not a pleasant experience but when the personnel talking to you smiles and says "welcome to the unites states, have a good trip", it's nice. Toronto airport and custom agents where aggressive and impolite and acted like assholes. I was very mad when the supervisor shouted "Mam! move forward" at my wife when a normal person would have said "Next please". I can imagine what foreign travelers think of Canada when faced with customs agents that act like prison guards in a bad movie. Same is true when it comes to ordering items out of country and having a person who has no idea what hes talking about treat you like a criminal because hes trying to play cops and robbers at his job. Delays are to long, personnel don't really know what they are doing. Quality and performance is always a leadership problem. Maybe it's time to get rid of the problem at the top.

Have you been drinking
Crossing the border back to Canada I have been asked multiple times this question. 10:00 am or 10:00 pm, doesn't matter. Stone cold sober,no odor , no red or foggy eyes. I always retort with, do I look like I have been drinking? Kind of pisses them off,but derails the accusation or implication of drinking quite quickly. Stand your ground and it actually confuses their rhetoric.
How many do not complain?
I have heard from several people who have crossed the border about rude & militant border guards. They said the same thing this article suggests, that the border guards have changed. They spoke of long waits with rude cowboy border guards who would tear your car apart if you say anything they do not like. I see this with all law enforcement these days. Our police are no longer police anymore & more resemble a paramilitary assault force that would make any army proud. This is a sign of the times that is only going to get worse as our surveillance society continues to take over & law enforcement encroaches our everyday lives.
complaints against border patrol
I believe it.thesr complaints arent from overly sensetive disgruntled un general people. I live on the windsor/ fetroit border, and they are the rudist withvthe mist ignorant, pasive agressive comments/insuts. Their horrible attitude on both sides is aleays the first thing i say when adked about going thru customs.

Crossing 'out of' Canada
If they're 'crossing out of Canada' and are treated poorly at the border, it's the American border officials they should be complaining about.
They are extremely rude at the borders. They do not know how to be polite or smile and they treat you as if you are a criminal. They attempt to antagonize you to draw you into an arguement so they can flex their muscles & pull you in & search your car for a cheap thrill on their behalf. The American side is so much more polite and are actually friendly. The Canadian border officers need to learn how to treat people from the American border officers. Or fire all of them and hire new ones and to remember we are all human.
